Guardians of the Papyrus
In the silent papyrus wetlands of Utonga, a rare antelope is fighting for survival—and we have chosen to stand as its guardians.
Hidden among the dense papyrus of the Lake Victoria basin lives one of Africa’s most elusive and remarkable antelopes: the sitatunga. Perfectly adapted to wetland life, this shy and graceful species depends on healthy papyrus ecosystems for its survival. Yet across Africa, many wetlands are disappearing due to human pressure and habitat loss.
At Utonga Nature & Wildlife Conservancy (UNC), we are working to restore and protect these vital wetlands while establishing a safe sanctuary where the sitatunga can live, breed, and thrive. Through conservation science, ecological restoration, and community partnership, UNC is creating a refuge for this extraordinary species.
Our mission is simple but profound:
to protect the wetlands, safeguard biodiversity, and ensure that the sitatunga continues to inhabit the papyrus landscapes of Lake Victoria.
At UNC, we proudly serve as the "Guardians of the Papyrus."
